It may be that the power steering has failed. The screech may have been a belt breaking, (if the car has a separate belt for power steering versus a single belt that drives all accessories), and as a result the power steering pump is no longer being spun by the belt. A replacement belt is likely $20 and perhaps $30 to install. Good luck!
